Ulrike Stein elected to Metastasis Research Society Board
The MRS is a society devoted to all aspects of metastasis research and organizes scientific events, awards prizes and publishes three scientific journals. Members of the MRS elect the four-member board every two years from among their ranks. Each board member is assigned to a geographical region. Ulrike Stein (Europe) will join Julio Aguirre-Ghiso (America), Yasuma Kato and John Price (Asia/Australia) as members of the new board, whose term will begin in September.
The focus of Ulrike's work is to identify molecules which play a key role in cancer progression and metastasis. Several years ago, her research team identified the genes MACC1 (metastasis associated in colon cancer 1) and S100A4 as important players in the cascades of signals that trigger metastases in specific types of cancer. At the moment, these biomarkers are being evaluated as targets for interventions against metastasis.
Ulrike qualified as professor in 2003 and became full professor at the Charité in 2009. She has been head of the “Translational Oncology of Solid Tumors” group within the ECRC in Berlin-Buch since 2013 and has worked at the MDC, the Robert Rössle Clinic and the US National Cancer Institute in the past.
